Good Still Happens #hope #goodhappens #gooddeeds

Have you noticed that social media is depressing? My Facebook feed in 2015 was a steady stream of anger and negativity. I saw suicides, missing kids, crime, and discrimination in every imaginable form, from anti-LGBT to authors trying to apply the doctrine of manifest destiny to the gay romance genre.

It's enough to make people walk away from a website. Sadly, several authors have, distancing themselves from Facebook to focus on more productive endeavors. For several weeks, I was one of them. I don't have the time or interest in watching people make a hobby of tearing each other apart.

The problem with walking away is that too many people depend on their Facebook friends for support. It may be a cradle of hostility, but it's also a source of camaraderie, and that makes it difficult to leave behind. Thankfully, it doesn't have to remain a tribute to tragedy, bigotry, and Trump.

That's why I started my #GoodHappens campaign.

Despite the dismal offerings of the media, good things are still happening all around the world every day. People go out of their way to rescue animals, adopt refugees, and feed the homeless. When one of those stories makes it online, I boost its signal as a reminder to myself and others.

There's no denying the ugliness exists. The U.S. political machine has become so twisted and blatantly corrupt it makes Nixon look like a saint in comparison. Religious leaders regularly endorse violence and intolerance. The last time I saw a group peacefully assembled was HempFest.

It's important to be aware of the current state of our society because some battles are worth fighting. That doesn't mean Facebook needs to be a daily parade of idiocy when so many people already struggle with depression. I don't want my page to provide the final insult that leads someone to decide there's no reason to hang around the planet any longer. I prefer to offer proof not all is lost.

It's not 'hell in a handbasket'. It's birth pains of change, and they're never easy.

Until we get past our current state of mayhem, I'll be providing a small dose of happiness and hope because, despite it all, good happens.

Join me on my page or start a #GoodHappens campaign of your own. It's time to prove sanity and social media don't have to be mutually exclusive.
